WASHINGTON, D.C. — This Friday, November 7, students, faculty and campus workers across more than 100 college and university campuses will hold nonviolent actions under the banner of “Students Rise Up” to reject broad attacks on higher education’s freedom to learn, speak and organize.
The national campaign comes as the White House extends its “loyalty oath” (initially offered to 9 universities) to all US colleges & universities, demanding they adopt Donald Trump’s compact in order to secure federal funding. From east coast to west, students at large universities like University of Washington and Stanford and smaller colleges in Tampa, Florida or Hudson, NY will host a wide variety of actions on Friday, including rallies, walkouts and teach-ins to resist autocratic attacks on campuses. Participation is nonviolent and lawful.
Frontline for Freedom, a network of student & movement partners mobilizing on November 7th is helping organize Students Rise Up.
“The attacks on higher ed are attacks on truth, freedom, and our future. We’re organizing to protect campuses as spaces for learning, not control — for liberation, not censorship,” said Brianni Davillier, student organizer for Public Citizen, a partner on Frontline for Freedom.
“November 7th is only the start,” said Kaden Ouimet, student organizer for Public Citizen, a partner on Frontline for Freedom. We’re building a movement of students, faculty, and campus workers to demand our colleges do not comply with the Trump regime, and its authoritarian campus compact. We know that to fully take on autocracy, we have to take on the material conditions that gave rise to it. That is why we’re not only out to defeat Trump, but to also win a vision for affordability, security, and freedom for our generation — both in higher education, and in our democracy.”
